Driving a Honda Civic, the Sydneysiders outlasted other fancied runners to take the title, including Dean Herridge in a Hyundai Coupe, and fellow West Australian Ross Mackenzie in a Daihatsu Charade.

Middleton and Long secured the title at the Rally of Melbourne in a season which saw Possum Bourne win the second of his seven consecutive ARC titles.
The 1997 championship also saw Michael Guest win the Group N title in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 3.
