The 2009 George Woods Memorial Trial, incorporating the Rookies Ramble, will be held in the Powelltown-Noojee area on February 21, with the start and finish at Neerim.

The event will include a special event for beginners, reviving the Rookies Ramble event that was first held by the Peugeot Car Club of Victoria about 40 years ago.

This event will be the 28th running of the George Woods, and the 21st year with Glad Fish as director.

Beginners naturally want a novice event, but the George Woods also caters for novices with some rally experience.

The event has two aims: to give rookies and novices a chance to get rally experience, while not excluding higher graded drivers and navigators, especially if pairing with the less experienced entrants.

With this in mind, the 2009 George Woods will be divided into two sections. The first section will be the Rookies Ramble, with 50 kilometres of competitive sections for first-timers. There will be an award for the winners of the Rookies Ramble.

The remaining 75 km of competitive sections will be more challenging to both driver and navigator, but rookies are invited to continue on and compete in this component. The route is designed so that they may then drop out if they find the going becoming too hard. Should they do so, they will not affect their result in the Rookies Ramble, but will have gained some more experience. The two components together form the George Woods Memorial Trial.
