A stellar field of classic rally cars is set to be unleashed on the Sunshine Coast next weekend in the Brakes Direct International Rally of Queensland.

Ranging from Porsches to Toyota Celicas, 10 classic rally cars of seven different makes representing five countries make up the field for round three of the Australian Classic Rally Series.

Series points leader Jeff David will debut a new-old Porsche 911 Carrera while Cathy Donohue will bring another taste of German motorsport history to the rally at the wheel of her BMW E30 M3.

Toyota is well represented with the ferocious Celica RA40 World Rally replica of Neal Bates ready to battle again after missing out on vital championship points in the previous round in Western Australia due to engine problems.

Other Toyotas will be the Corolla of Clay Badenoch and Celica RA22 Chris Harbeck, both from Queensland.

Five times Australian Rally Champion Ross Dunkerton will make his first competitive appearance of the year in his Ford Escort RS 1800, joined by the similar car of fellow Queenslander Keith Fackrell.

Michael Francis in a Mitsubushi Lancer, Richard Anderson in an Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT and Kent Lawrence in a “new” Saab 99 EMS complete an exciting field that promises spectators plenty of traditional sideways driving.

Scott Pedder, CEO of the Bosch Australian Rally Championship, believes the Classic category is an enormous crowd pleaser.

“The Classics are a big drawcard and this is the strongest field of Classics so far this year,” he said.

“The noise and the spectacle of the Classics are a real blast from the past allowing older fans to reminisce about the forest racers of their youth as well as educating our younger fans in the rich heritage of our sport.

“The reality is that with advances in technology these newly-built Classics go, handle and stop better than they did 30 years ago and in the hands of the likes of Neal Bates and Ross Dunkerton they are even more spectacular than they were back in the day.”

The Classic will run ahead of the FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship and Bosch ARC field in the Special Stages.
