International rallying star, Alister McRae today announced his intention to compete in the 2013 Alpine Rally of East Gippsland. McRae, a works driver in the World Rally Championship for Mitsubishi and Hyundai, is currently building an iconic Group 4 specification Escort RS1800 Classic Rally Car which he will use on the Alpine.

The McRae name has been synonymous with the spectacular sport of rallying for three decades. It was Alister’s late brother Colin McRae that famously won the 1995 World Championship.

Father Jimmy and sons Colin and Alister have, between them, won just about every title worth winning, including British, Asia-Pacific and World Rally Championships. Their sport has taken them to some of the most challenging environments on the planet, on almost every continent and their success has come from a blend of dedication, adaptability and supreme car control and fitness.

Some of Alister’s notable achievements in the sport include:

  • 1992 Group N British Rally Champion
  • 1995 British Rally Champion
  • 1999 Joint Formula 2 Asia-Pacific Rally Champion
  • Number of World Rally Championship events competed: 76
  • Number of WRC Formula 2 wins: 7
  • Number of WRC Formula 2 podiums: 10
  • Number of WRC Group N wins: 2

On announcing his entry into the Alpine Rally Alister said:

“It’s been a busy year for me business wise but no Rallying so I can’t wait to get out on such an iconic event as the Alpine Rally. I’m in the process of building a new Group 4 MKII Escort and the idea of some 450 stage km’s, blind, in a rear wheel drive is really exciting. I’m sure, along with all the other competitors, we can put on a real good show.”

Alister McRae, Ford Escort RS1800The Alpine Rally of East Gippsland is a rally in the style of the 1970’s. One of those aspects is the lack of pace notes; the crews do not have the chance to survey the route before competition starts. This is often referred to as a ‘blind’ rally

Alpine Rally director Russell Opie was delighted with this latest announcement. “The McRae family are like rallying royalty and their achievements and spectacular style put them right at the top of the list of ‘must see’ rally drivers. It’s fantastic news for Historic Rallying in Australia.”

The rally kicks off on Friday 29th November with an exciting Super Special Stage through the heart of Lakes Entrance. This stage is sure to attract many thousands of spectators to watch the drivers display their skills around a one kilometre course starting on Marine Parade and finishing in Mechanics Street.

The event finishes back in Lakes Entrance on Sunday afternoon after 3 days of gruelling competition.
