FIA European Rally Championship rookie Max Vatanen has revealed how he turned to Facebook to secure his entry for this week’s Geko Ypres Rally.

Vatanen, the son of 1981 world champion Ari, will make his debut on the asphalt event in a Renault Twingo R2 after he gathered together enough funds to tackle what will be his first sealed-surface start.

“Unfortunately motorsport is very expensive nowadays and you need to be creative in order to raise budget,” said Vatanen Jr.

“I offered 20 persons to have their name on the roof of my car for 100 euros each, and I am very thankful to the 16 supporters that booked their place. It is important to be active yourself and not wait that things happen by themselves. Hard work and determination are needed in order to progress.”

It's a similar sponsorship method to that which Brendan Reeves and Rhianon Smyth have used so successfully over the past three years.
