New Zealand’s popular Ashley Forest Rallysprint has been cancelled due to ongoing COVID-19 uncertainty.
The North Canterbury event was scheduled to run over the September 19-20 weekend on its traditional 1.7km uphill/downhill gravel course at Mt Grey Road.
Organised by the Christchurch-based Rally and Trials Enthusiasts Club (RATEC) since 1979, this year’s rallysprint had already attracted a strong entry of more than 60 drivers, headed by former WRC contender Hayden Paddon.
It’s the latest event lost during a difficult year for rally fans and competitors. New Zealand’s return to the FIA World Rally Championship, the New Zealand Rally Championship and many other events have been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Another recent cancellation has been the Clubmans Rally in the Maramarua Forest that had been planned for Sunday, September 6. The next scheduled rally is currently the South Canterbury Spring Rally at Timaru on Saturday, September 26.
