Chris Atkinson holds down a strong fourth place at the end of the first day of the Rally New Zealand, held in muddy conditions.
The Subaru driver maintained his fourth place for the whole day, finishing with the fastest time on the final super special stage at Mystery Creek.
Ford's Marcus Gronholm holds a 13 second lead over the Citroen of Sebastien Loeb, while team-mate, Mikko Hirvonen, is third in the second Focus.
This is Atkinson's third Rally of New Zealand in a factory Impreza World Rally Car.
