Tasmania’s newest motorsport event, Targa Hellyer Gorge, has received a major boost with Burnie City Council signing on as the event’s major partner.

Burnie City Council has committed a significant amount of sponsorship for the inaugural Targa Hellyer Gorge, to be held on February 7.

The brand new event is designed to give first time drivers a taste of real Targa competition on one of Targa's most legendary stages, enabling them to learn what it takes to tackle the demanding week-long Targa Tasmania (April 27 – May 2, 2015).

It has also attracted more experienced competitors keen for a pre-Targa Tasmania hit out.

“Burnie City Council welcomes this new event and is very pleased to be a sponsor of the 2015 Targa Hellyer Gorge event,” Mayor Anita Dow said.

“We acknowledge the economic and community benefits this event will bring to our vibrant city.”

According to Targa Australia’s Mark Perry, the sponsorship has provided a real boost to the new event, which is already attracting a quality field of competitors.

“We’re excited to be bringing a new Targa event to the north west of the state, and the sponsorship from Burnie City Council will help to ensure that the event is a success first time out,” Perry said.

“Targa Hellyer Gorge will provide a great day's competition for all those preparing for Targa Tasmania in May, along with those who have limited time and/or budget, who just want to experience a Targa event.”

Competitors will tackle the famous Hellyer Gorge road on six occasions, with a total competitive distance of around 100 kilometres.

There are vehicle classes for a wide range of cars under the Targa rules, as well as a category for vehicles that do not fit within the Targa Technical Regulations.
