The FIA World Motor Sport Council has announced the World Rally Championship calendar for 2013, with Rally Australia confirmed as the tenth round.

Following on from its first running on the Coffs Coast in 2011, the event will return to the New South Wales mid-north coast on 12-15 September.

Rally Australia dates back to 1988, when it began in Perth. It ran as a round of the WRC in Perth for 18 years from 1989.

It returned in the NSW Northern Rivers region in 2009 after a two-year hiatus, before moving to the Coffs Coast in 2011.

Andrew Papadopoulos, President, CAMS, says the return of Rally Australia is good news for rallying.

“The first running of Rally Australia in the Coffs Coast region was a tremendous success,” said Mr Papadopoulos. “It was extremely well run, and the roads provided plenty of action for the spectators.

“We’re thrilled that Rally Australia, the FIA and the NSW Government, through Destinations NSW, were able to return such an important international motor sport event to the region.

“The Coffs Coast region is a wonderful destination every day of the year – but it is even more so when some of the biggest stars in world motor sport are fighting to win a world championship rally on the region’s roads.

“On behalf of CAMS, I’d very much like to thank Destinations NSW for their support of the event, and its involvement in bringing the World Rally Championship back to Australia.
