The AGL Rally SA - Rally of the Heartland is a long way off (June 2019), but the event already has paid up entries, and several holding deposits. The first of those is a competitive duo in a car with a truly interesting history, from Gunnawyn Motorsport's John Carney/ Tracey Dewhirst in their 1996 Peugeot 306 F2 Carney was a foundation member of the Pakenham Auto Club in 1972 and has been involved in all aspects of club organisation. He is currently treasurer of the club. His motorsport involvement in competition has included motorkhana, khanacross, hillclimb, circuit racing and rallying. He has been involved with every Alpine Rally since 1995 as a competitor or official, and the ARC in 2011 running a Hyundai Getz for Tony and Nikki Moore to use in the Eco Class. Joining him will be co-driver Tracey Dewhurst. When John approached her about the event, she was keen to add the AGL Rally of the Heartland to the list, and sit in the Peugeot with such interesting history. Tracey started rallying back in 1995, competing in Victorian and WA state championships, multi-day rallies including the Classic Outback Trial and a few Alpine events. In more recent years she has been competing internationally in various events in Finland and New Zealand, which is set to continue. The Peugeot 306 F2 was built for Philip Morgan in the UK by Simon Galbraith in 1996, and Philip contested the 1997 British Mintex F2 Championship in it. It was later bought by Gerry Fitzgerald and shipped to Australia where it was prepped for the Harbour City Rally in 2002, but did not compete. It was not used again until bought by Russell Dixon and was used in the Rally of Canberra. Gunnawyn Motorsport has fostered many young people in rallysport, and still continues this today with two cars in the Fiesta Rally Series as part of the Focus on Furniture Victorian Rally Championship. Carney has been part of many rally and off road service teams over the last 15 years. In 2019, John intends to compete in the AGL Rally of the Heartland and the Alpine Rally, and will support and sponsor a competitor in the Victorian Rally Championship.
