While million-dollar cars and superstar drivers battle out the World Rally Championship at Rally Australia next September, another event also promises to have spectators in the Coffs Coast forests on their toes and cheering.

Entrants in the Coffs Coast Classic Rally, which will be run concurrently with Rally Australia, will drive Ford Escorts, Datsun 1600s, Mazda RX-7s, Mitsubishi Colts and others simply for fun, unlike their high-stakes WRC counterparts.

But they will fight equally hard for their trophies - the classics are renowned for their never-say-die approach to every event.

The Coffs Coast Classic Rally will treat spectators to a taste of the Seventies – some say rallying’s heyday – when cars had only rear-wheel drive, carburettor engines and no hi-tech driver aids.

They slid sideways through the corners, spraying gravel, were loud, and their drivers manhandled them rather than used the relatively restrained precision of a modern WRC pilot.

Spectators loved them and have welcomed a recent strong revival of the Classic rally movement in Australia.

Rally Australia organisers are inviting Expressions of Interest from potential entrants in the Coffs Coast Classic Rally.

The event will be staged on 9-11 September over approximately 240 kilometres of forestry and shire roads that include part of the WRC course.

The entry fee will be $1500 and Expressions of Interest can be submitted through the Rally Australia website, rallyaustralia.com.au
