Three Australian Classic Rally Car Association (ACRA) members have finished in the top 10 at last weekend’s Cerberus Stages in Victoria.
Competing in the first round of ACRA’s Victorian Classic Rally Challenge, Jeff David, driving his Porsche 911, finished in a sensational sixth place, outgunning many later model turbo 4WD cars. ACRA President, Darryn Snooks, driving his Alpine Rally-winning Datsun Stanza, followed him home in seventh place only 7 seconds adrift. Snooks’ brother, Justyn Snooks, rounded out the top 10 in an RS2000 Escort.
The highlight for the rally was the debut of the Snooks Motorsport Nissan 240RS. Former Australian Rally Champion Ross Dunkerton took to the wheel and commented on the great turn in and suspension balance. The car was the centre of attention through the rally by many spectators.
Whilst not finishing due to a panhard rod bracket failing, he commented that the 240RS has a lot of potential and will be a front runner in classic events in the future.
Unfortunately, Terry Trewern in his neatly turned out "Castrol Corolla", managed to clip an embankment while pushing hard through a corner, causing considerable damage to the car. Both crew were okay.
ACRA’s classic drivers commented on the fantastic roads used by the Cerberus organising team, and congratulated them for a job well done.
The next round on ACRA’s Classic Rally Challenge calendar is the Oberon Rally on April 12.
Classic rallying is growing in popularity with competitors and spectators alike. Corporate interest is also growing, with ACRA having cash prizes for the winners of the national and State-based challenges, making ACRA’s challenges the best rally series for cash prizes in Australian rallying.
Series registration is free, but you will need to comply with the series and CAMS Classic regulations, as well as run an ACRA sticker on your car to be eligible to score points. Series Regulations are available on the ACRA website.
ACRA have an active rally forum www.classicrallycars.com and if you are into classic rallying, you’re welcome to join in. Membership of ACRA is available for only $40.
