Rotorua’s Sloan Cox is looking forward to the opportunity to honour one of his rallying heroes this weekend with the 10th Anniversary Possum Bourne Memorial Rally, which is based out of Possum’s home town, Pukekohe.

As a youngster, the now 21-year old Cox (pictured with Possum) keenly followed Bourne’s exploits all around the world.

“The fact that we are doing it for Possum is pretty special,” says Cox.

Joined again by co-driver Sarah Coatsworth, the team are looking forward to getting back on the pace notes after most recently competing in the Tauranga Clubmans rally, which was a blind (non-pace noted) event.

Also exciting the team about this weekend’s event is the dual-surface format, which sees competitors on the gravel roads of Maramarua forest in the morning before switching to tarmac stages for the afternoon. While a challenge, Cox and Coatsworth are confident of putting on a good showing.

After an engine failure in testing prior to the Tauranga event, the Cox Motorsport team will return with a new engine as well as what Cox describes as ‘a few new goodies’. With a successful pre-event test under their belts, confidence is high that the Taslo Engineering Mitsubishi Evo 10 will be near the front of the field come the event finish on Saturday night.

"Testing last weekend went really well, with Sarah and I jumping in the car and going well straight off the mark" comments Sloan.

The 10th Anniversary Possum Bourne Memorial Rally kicks off in the town of Pukekohe at 7am, with close to 100km of gravel stages before completing a further 28km of tarmac prior to the finish at Pukekohe Park Raceway just after 5pm.
