Sydney brothers Ben and Mathew Cullen are set to take on the world's best rally drivers at the upcoming Repco Rally Australia, to be held between 3-6 September in northern NSW.
What makes this feat remarkable is just over two months ago their Evolution Lancer RS, which will compete in the Production Group N class, was nothing more than a bare shell sitting in Ben’s garage.
With lots of late nights and a huge amount of help from the rally community, they are now ready to tackle one of the biggest motorsport events in the world.
“It's been a tough couple of months with lots of tight deadlines, but all the suppliers and fabricators of parts have been a great help. As soon as I mention what I’m trying to do in such a short time frame, everyone has bent over backwards to accommodate me,†Ben said.
A day-long test session at Oran Park for the car's first and last shakedown before the rally went smoothly, with the car proving to be a great performer out of the box, with Ben quietly confident of a good result.
“The test session couldn’t have gone any better and the car didn’t miss a beat all day, which is a huge testament to the work Mitsubishi puts into their Evolution Lancers out of the factory. That we can just bolt a basically standard car together with a roll cage and some rally suspension and be competitive, is amazing.â€
Ben and Mathew will use the opportunity to promote young driver education and entry level motorsport events which will be run by the North Shore Sporting car club. These events are aimed at giving young drivers more car control skills and at the same time giving them an introduction to entry level motor sport.
The first event will be held at Cattai just north of Windsor on November 1.
