DustTrails, Episode 28: Stewart Reid’s journey to the ARC

Stewart Reid’s decision to emigrate to Australia has had a lasting impact on Australia’s rallying community, but not many know the coin toss behind it.

Reid had a job offer from Toyota Team Europe and a long-awaited opportunity to move to Australia simultaneously.

“At 21, we had the opportunity to migrate to Australia, which was meant to be a two-year process, but that sort of came through within six months,” Reid explains to RallySport Magazine’s Luke Whitten.

“I’d also applied for a job at the same time with Toyota Team Europe, because I obviously finished my apprenticeship in the Toyota dealership, and had done relatively well and done lots of Toyota courses.

“So within a space of two or three weeks, I had two things that I was really keen to do.”

He left it up to a fateful toss of a coin.

RallySport Magazine’s DustTrails Podcast returns, with Reid reflecting on his early days in the sport.

From winning on just his third event to his other memorable moments in the sport, all is discussed in part one of this fascinating interview.

In his 30 years in Australia, Reid has had a career behind the wheel of vehicles such as Starions, Celicas, Lancers, and Imprezas, but it’s the relationships he’s built that are closest to him.
