DVD REVIEW: Carlos Sainz: WRCs Greatest Drivers
- 6th July 2009, 8:51am
Yes, Carlos Sainz, the affable Spaniard, one of the world’s greatest rally drivers.
Carlos Sainz, fondly known by his legions of fans as ‘El Matador’, has enjoyed a spectacular driving career which included works drives for Ford, Subaru, Toyota, Citroen and Lancia’ and which have earned him the respect of team managers, his opponents and spectators alike.
The ultimate professional, Sainz, had he not taken up rallying, could have secured himself a place in the Spanish Real Madrid soccer team, been a leading squash player or a top contender in many other sports. That he chose rallying is motorsport’s good fortune.
A recently released DVD charts his involvement in rallying, his successes, his disappointments and his determination to succeed. “WRC Greatest Drivers – Carlos Sainzâ€, covers his two decades in the sport and features 52 minutes of unbelievable footage highlighting his illustrious career, which includes his first WRC victory in the Acropolis Rally and his groundbreaking win of the 1990 Rally Finland, where he laid to rest the unwritten law than a non-Scandinavian could not win the event.
Sainz also won the respect of team managers for his unbelievable testing skills that helped his teams to victory.
The DVD includes not only high speed rally action, but interviews with Sainz and his devoted co-driver of 15 years, Luis Moya, the person who guided him to his many wins. Nobody could claim to have had a closer relationship with Sainz than did Moya in that period, and the video uncovers the other side of the Spaniard that few outsiders ever see.
But this DVD doesn’t get bogged down with dry, boring interviews. It features plenty of furious action from all parts of the world, both on-board and from a spectator’s point of view. Our rating? 9.5/10.
Available from RallySport Magazine for just $31.95 plus postage, and it’s well worth more than one look.
