Entries now open for Southern Cross Gold Anniversary Rally

Entries are now officially open for The Southern Cross Gold Anniversary Rally, to be held from 8-19 November to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first Southern Cross event in 1966. The rally is being organised by Australia’s leading Historic Rally club, the Historic Rally Association.

Regulations for the event have been approved by CAMS and are available for download from the event web site, www.southerncrossanniversaryrally.com.au, or the Historic Rally Association web site www.hra.org.au

Entries will be limited to a maximum of 70. Past winners of the Southern Cross Rally, Barry Ferguson (1967, 1970) and Ross Dunkerton (1980) are expected to head the entry list, with many other former competitors indicating their interest.  Forty expressions of interest have already been received, and it is expected that the event will be over subscribed by the closing date in October.

Persons and cars that competed in any of the original Southern Cross rallies from 1966 to 1980 will be given preferential entries and a strong field of current historic rally competitors will make up the balance.

The Southern Cross Gold Anniversary Rally is a touring road event, covering around 3000 kms over eleven days with a total of 40 timed competitive sections. A large part of the course will re-trace the roads of the early Southern Cross rallies. Roll over protection is not required, which will allow classic cars of the Southern Cross era to run without major modifications.

Clerk of Course and road director Graham Wallis has competed a total survey of the course, so organisation is well advanced for the November event. The rally will conclude at Australia’s round of the World Rally Championship Rally Australia at Coffs Harbour, where SCGAR competitors will take part in   Rally Australia special stages as determined by the Rally Australia organisers.
