Eli Evans, the younger brother of Australian Rally Champion Simon Evans, has his sights set on the World Rally Championship this year with plans to contest the Fiesta Sporting Trophy in the WRC.
Evans and his father, Peter, have set out on an ambitious plan to contest six events in the championship, but as expected, it is dependent on finances.
Speaking at Rally Tasmania last weekend, where Eli drove his Subaru Impreza WRX, Peter Evans said that everything was still up in the air regarding the WRC plans.
“I’ve told Eli that I would put in a large percentage of the money, and it’s up to him to find the rest in sponsorship,” Peter Evans told RallySport Magazine.
Evans estimated that it would cost around $400,000 to contest six events in the WRC, and was unsure whether raising that money was going to be possible.
As an alternative, and if the WRC program does not come off, Evans is likely to contest the Fiesta one-make series in the New Zealand Rally Championship in 2008.
The Evans team have not dismissed the Australian Rally Championship from their 2008 plans, but it seems unlikely that Eli will contest the whole series, despite having an Impreza that he can use.
The current uncertainty regarding the ARC is not filling privateer competitors with confidence, and even Toyota, the only manufacturer committed to the 2008 ARC, are currently trying to formulate plans to ensure the ARC gains significant media coverage during 2008.
On the driver front, it is believed that Simon Evans’ Toyota contract expires at the end of March 2008, although it would seem unlikely that Toyota would let the double-Australian Rally Champion slip through their fingers.
