A free outdoor concert starring Australian music legend Jon Stevens will send Repco Rally Australia off to a rocking start in Murwillumbah on Thursday evening.

Stevens will sing live on stage for 50 minutes in Wharf Street, Murwillumbah, as the finale to two hours of free opening celebrations before the official start of Repco Rally Australia.

Just 30 minutes after Stevens finishes his set with a rendition of Advance Australia Fair, Citroen’s five-time World Rally Champion Sebastien Loeb will blast on to the Tweed Super Special Stage in his Citroen C4 on the first of 35 competitive stages of the inaugural World Rally round in the New South Wales Northern Rivers.

The opening celebrations, starting at 4.15 pm with a welcome speech by Tweed Shire Mayor Cr Joan von Lieshout, promise one of the biggest parties Murwillumbah has seen.

All the cars in the rally will be lined up on public view in Wharf Street and all drivers will be interviewed on stage and sign autographs from beside the stage.

Drivers and visitors will experience Australia’s unique indigenous culture with a Welcome to Country ceremony and traditional dances performed by representatives of Bundjalung Kunjiel.

The street will be a hive of activity and colour with stilt walkers and the Hot Chilli Drummers - boys from Chillingham aged between 13 and 17 years – pumping out an energetic beat with African drums and congas.

Murwillumbah streets will be closed from 12 midday to prepare for the celebrations.
