South Australian Steve Glenney will return to the Australian Rally Championship at August’s Rally of South Australia, driving the Subaru Impreza WRX that took Cody Crocker to the Asia Pacific Rally Championship title in 2006.

Glenney, who won his home ARC round last year, has since sold his own Subaru and had looked likely to drive Mitsubishi’s second Lancer Evo 9 in this year’s ARC. But when Mitsubishi failed to fund an ARC program in 2007, Glenney was left on the sidelines.

“It’s been difficult keeping track of the ARC rounds on the computer,” he told RallySport Magazine today, “but hopefully I’ll be back for the SA round in August.”

Glenney had a close look at the Les Walkden Rallying WRX when he was on holiday in Tasmania recently, and confirmed to RallySport Magazine that he was close to finalising the deal.

He had considered debuting the car in Canberra at the start of June, but now believes that a local debut will allow him to get back into the swing of competition a lot easier. He has not driven in a gravel rally since last year’s Rally of SA.

Looking to the future, Glenney said that he was hopeful that a drive with Mitsubishi would be on offer in 2008, but admitted that he needed to get back out there competing again, simply to keep his hand in.

“Hopefully, after a year off, Mitsubishi will have the budget to enter the ARC again in 2008. In the meantime, I just want to get out there and compete again,” he added.

At this stage, Glenney’s budget for the remainder of the season, where he hopes to do the final three ARC rounds, has not been finalized, nor has a co-driver for the events.

“To be honest I haven’t looked that far ahead,” he added. “But I’ve spoken to a couple of co-drivers who are really keen.”
