The Christchurch Casino Rally Team pairing of Matt Jansen and Jason Farmer have come away from the International Rally of Whangarei still holding a strong fourth position in the New Zealand Gold Star Rally Championship.
Jansen struggled early with the handling of the Christchurch Casino Subaru but used his mechanical knowledge to change the set up of the car and increase his pace over the course of the day to allow him to battle with fellow junior competitor Sloan Cox, with Jansen taking the upper hand late in the day to win the battle.
With day one’s handling problems out of the way and a new opportunity to score some more points, Jansen became involved in a tight four way battle with Cox and rookie rivals Keiran Hall and Kingsley Thompson that was separated by less than a minute at the midday lunch break.
An afternoon push saw Jansen record a top five finish amongst his New Zealand Rally Championship Group N rivals, a result that meant the team left with a fourth place result that leaves Jansen maintaining his strong fourth position in the Gold Star championship chase. As an added bonus co-driver Jason Farmer has moved into third place in the co-drivers championship.
Up next for the Christchurch Casino Rally Team is round four of the New Zealand Rally Championship, the Rally Wairarapa. Wairarapa is another event that the team has not contested to date. Despite this being a big hurdle, the team have shown that they are fast learners on the two new events they have contested so far this year.
