WA rally veteran Leo Iriks has won the final battle of the WA Rally Championship’s 2WD competition. Iriks claimed victory in the Darling 200 which was run over dusty, forestry stages around Jarrahdale on Saturday, November 15.
The Ford Escort driver finished ahead of Aaron Foster in a Hyundai Excel and took the lead from Alex White who had come out firing from the start.
White had an almost-three minute lead over the competition after the first three stages, but was forced out of the event when his Nissan Silvia hit a stump.
In the Clubman Cup competition, Julian Wright backed up his Carrington’s Traffic Services Safari win with another victory in his Datsun 1200. Wright, who’ll be a competitor to watch in 2015, said: “I hope to run a full season next year.”
Dene Courtis was second in the Darling 200 in his Toyota Corolla, while Carl Rattenbury, who had already sealed the 2014 Clubman Cup Series in his Ford Escort, finished third.
Shane Harmer, who had been chasing second spot in the 2014 Series, bowed out of the Darling 200 when his Holden Commodore developed a brake issue.
With the WA Rally Championship season officially over, trophies will be handed to 2014 winners at the RallyWA Awards Presentation.
Doug Tostevin and Tammy Adams will take home the silverware for the 2014 Outright Championship, while Sean Keating and Caleb Ash, who were absent from the Darling 200, will be named 2014 2WD Champions.
The 2WD Challenge has been won by rally stalwart Andy van Kann and co-driver Abbey Hayes, who has also won Rookie Co-driver of the Year.
Jeff Mizan has claimed the honour of 2014 Rookie Driver.
The RallyWA Awards Presentation will be held at Perth Zoo on Saturday, January 31.
