26-year old Japanese driver, Takamoto Katsuta, won the hearts in Bostalsee after his impressive first rally in a World Rally Car in a WRC event. He finished tenth overall. He is certainly a family man. His father Norihiko was 2012 national Japanese champion, who competed in Rally Australia on two occasions. Takamoto selected competition number 17 because that was his own birth date, and when publicly interviewed at the finish he sent greetings to his mother – as the day of the finish was her birthday! He said he learned quite a lot about the car: “How to drive it and how the car behaves in tarmac.” If, as expected, the all-asphalt Rally Japan, heavily supported by Toyota, will be included in the 2020 WRC calendar, that could be very helpful.
