Kiwi Derek Ayson to contest Border Ranges Rally
- 29th July 2013, 9:04am
A widely varied range of cars is being assembled that includes the modern AWD Rockets but also the Classics. Even ‘Zero’ and ‘Sweep’ will be interesting.
Derek Ayson multiple winner of New Zealand’s Classic Rally of Otago, will run one of Ed Mulligan’s cars as Car ‘0’ with the intent of having a good look at the event for a possible invasion of some very quick rally crews from across the ‘Ditch’ next year. Tony Quinn, usually seen in a Porsche and on tarmac, will run his brutish 6ltr Mitsubishi Pajero as ‘Sweep’ on Saturday.
One of the biggest fields of Classic Ford Escorts ever assembled in this country entered the 2012 event and this year is looking good. Ross and Lisa Dunkerton have again entered their BDA, Keith Callinan his BDG, Keith Fackrell his RS 1800; and the list goes on.
But if Ford Escorts dominated last year’s entry list the mighty ‘Datsun’ (nee Nissan) is making a come back this year with entries already received from Jack Monkhouse in the Silvia, John Spencer in the ‘Grunter’, Peter Leicht in another newish ‘Datto’, and Dave Feron in the newly built Stanza, to list just a few.
Peter Roberts and Steven Shepheard will be just a couple of the heavy weights in the modern AWD class. Robert’s car is on a ‘hat trick’ as it has won the last two BRRs.
The pace noted event will run out of Kyogle, northern NSW, from the 8th to the 11th August. For those who don’t like pace noting there is a complete road book supplied with your entry. Using only shire roads with central servicing each day the stages are all daylight except for the short spectator stages on Friday and Saturday night. For around $500 entry fee it’s a bargain for those wanting to ‘stretch the legs’ ready for the WRC.
