Residents of the Tweed and Kyogle shires are being encouraged to join a huge community volunteer team to help run Repco Rally Australia next September.

Organisers will need around 1500 volunteers for the 3-6 September rally, which will be the 10th round of the World Rally Championship.

The rally’s sporting director, Clerk of Course Michelle Gatton, says almost 900 people have offered their services already for a wide range of rewarding roles, from manning roadblocks to chaperoning overseas visitors and staffing the media centre.

“Volunteers are a large and vital part of motorsport at any level, but it’s rare they have a chance to be involved with such a prestigious international event as Repco Rally Australia,” Ms Gatton said.

“It’s wonderful that so many people have actively shown their support for the rally by volunteering already, but there are still plenty of spots available.

“While there is a core of specialist volunteers who work at many motorsport events, volunteering is a great way for local people also to play a part in the event their community is hosting.

“It encourages community cooperation and pride. The impression they make on international and interstate visitors will be important to the rally’s success and potential return trips to the region.

“Volunteers will find themselves part of  the event family at Rally Australia and their contributions will be appreciated and acknowledged by the competitors.”

Volunteering can give fans an “insider’s” chance to get closer to the rally action, meet drivers or observe the drama of the service park.

Motorsport experience is not necessary for many roles and training will be provided if required.

People wishing to volunteer should complete an Expression of Interest form, available to download from the Repco Rally Australia website (http://rallyaustralia.com/officials/expression-of-interest-form/) or from the Repco Rally Australia office at ph. (02) 6676 7025.
