The former Hyundai and Mitsubishi World Rally Championship star now lives in Australia with his Perth-born wife, and is eagerly looking at options for next year.
McRae, who drove an ex-South African Super 2000 Corolla in last year’s Rally of Great Britain, was impressed by the speed of Neal Bates’ Corolla on the short 2.7km stage. He also sat in with Michael Guest in Ford’s Fiesta.
“I’d love to be able to compete in the Australian Rally Championship next year,” McRae told RallySport Magazine today. “But it’s all about being able to put together the right package, which obviously isn’t cheap.”
McRae will be a keen onlooker as this weekend’s event takes place, but whether the popular Scot gets the chance to contest the ARC next year remains to be seen. He has already contested two rounds of the New Zealand Rally Championship in 2007.
