MSR Corporate's Les Walkden announced that Rally Tasmania would not be conducted in 2011, stating that low entry numbers in 2009 and 2010 had led to this decision.
However, it was also announced jointly by Les Walkden and Tony Wright (of Tony Wright Rallysport Management) that an “alliance” had be formed between the two parties to enable Tony Wright Rallysport Management (TWRM) to conduct a new Classic Tarmac Rally in 2011 on the traditional Rally Tasmania February date - the last weekend of the month.
Wright paid tribute to Les Walkden for providing TWRM with the opportunity to proceed with its classic rally project.
“I heard that Rally Tasmania may not happen again, so I came to Les with a proposal to conduct my own event in February," Wright said in an official press release.
"Les not only agreed, but has offered his company resources from MSR Corporate to me so as to enable this project to proceed. I am indebted to him for his assistance and we will be working hard to make this event a major success,” Wright said.
Walkden stated that he believed that with Wright’s experience in rally sport, it offered a successful recipe to ensure that the North West Coast of Tasmania continued to have a major motor sport event based there.
TWRM have chosen to support the classic rally marketplace after initial representations to competitors, who have warmly welcomed the opportunity to compete in Tasmania amongst other likeminded participants, representing the era of motor vehicles up to 1990.
Details on the event will be sent to prospective customers shortly, the release said.
