Following the postponement of the Caves Classic Rally due to the newly imposed NSW Government COVID-19 restrictions, organisers have already settled on a new event date. The rally is to be round two of the 2020 NSW Rally Championship, after the successful Rally of the Bay in early July. Originally scheduled for September 5, the Oberon-based North Shore Sporting Car Club rally is hoping to be held on a mid-October date.
"That's the weekend after the Bathurst 1000, and two weeks before the Monaro Stages," Caves Classic director, Jon Thomson, said today.
"We've already contacted most of our officials and everyone seems committed to the event and is pleased that we are targeting a new date." The new government regulations stipulate that as of August 19, no national or state level events (both Championships and Series) can be held anywhere in NSW. That takes the restrictions to the first weekend in October, but Thomson is well aware that things could change if COVID cases haven't reduced by then. "We're living in an extraordinary year and we need to treat it like that," he added. "We haven't seen anything like this since World War 2 or the Spanish Flu in 1918, so we just have to make changes on the run."
