Kiwi star Hayden Paddon is hopeful of getting back behind the wheel of a World Rally Car in 2021, despite his 2020 plans being dashed. Paddon has revealed that he had a four-event WRC program for 2020, culminating in Rally New Zealand in September, and all supported by Hyundai New Zealand. The Coronavirus put paid to that though. “Before the world got tipped upside down, we had plans with Hyundai NZ for a return to the WRC this year,” Paddon revealed.
“The idea and theme was based around a 100% Kiwi livery while driving a Hyundai WRC car for a second team.”
Paddon’s program included WRC rounds in Portugal, Sardinia and Finland, before his home rally in New Zealand. The 2016 Rally of Argentina WRC winner simply can’t take a trick in the past 12 months. He was set to contest last year’s Rally Finland until an unlucky testing crashed destroyed the Ford Fiesta WRC he was to drive. M-Sport came to the party and he was to contest Rally Australia in November, only for the bushfires to see that event cancelled. Now, his 2020 plans have been extinguished too. “Even though all these plans are now off the table for 2020, it is truly humbling to have the support of Hyundai NZ who had the vision, passion and heart to make this possible with us, and ultimately try and win Rally NZ,” he said. RallySport Magazine asked Paddon if that four-event program could possibly be transferred over to 2021.
“It’s hard to say – of course we will always try, but there’s a lot of unknowns for the future that are out of our control at present,” he added.
We have our fingers crossed for him. Surely, his luck will change for the better sooner or later.
