Greg Paul and Daryl Narain have travelled over 8000kms so far and have now reached Moscow on their Peking to Paris adventure. The pair, part of a contingent of New Zealand crews, have crossed desert and mountain by goat track and, after 24 days, have found the roads improving at last as they return to civilization.
"Both cars have run well but have taken a real pounding. The roads are among the worst in the world, especially in Eastern Russia", Greg said.
The Fiat exhaust systems, in particular, have been prone to cruel and unusual punishment. After an encounter with an 'enterprising' traffic policeman between Kazan and Nizhny-Novgorod, and some stunningly stupid passing manoeuvres, the crews were pleased to encounter a fairly good four lane highway for the last 440km into the Russian capital. They knew they had reached civilization when the last 500m to the hotel in Moscow took an hour because of a chaotic traffic jam!
