Horror stories from the tragic Victorian bushfires continue to dominate the news, and the rallying community has been affected, like most communities.

Victorian competitor, Steve White, not only lost his house in the fires, but also eight Saabs, including his immaculately presented works-replica rally car.

But among all the tragedy, there are some stories to put a smile on your face.

Two-time Australian Rally Champion, Geoff Portman, was at home on his own at Kinglake as the fires raged.

Portman, a former forester, did an amazing job keeping the fires from his house, despite around 80 per cent of his property being burnt. “Portholes” not only saved house, but every shed and animal on the property.

Of the 12 houses directly around the Portmans, only two survived.

The photos below were taken by Geoff’s daughter Jamie, and show the almost total devastation in Toolangi, including the Portman’s neighbour’s house.
