In atrocious weather conditions – so bad in fact that the authorities closed public roads and bridges in the district - Matt was the top qualifier throughout the elimination runs and therefore went into the final against 2004 NZ Rally Champion Chris West.
“If we all thought the weather and road conditions for Saturday’s qualifying runs were bad, Sunday’s were horrendous,” said Matt. “But it was the same for everyone, and the competition was VERY hot…”
Matt chose to run first in the final and posted his fastest time of the day in his MITECH WELDERS STADIUM CARS Subaru Impreza STi to set a more than competitive benchmark for Westy.
However, as Westy has shown in the New Zealand Rally Championship Power Stages since their introduction over the last two seasons, the Mitsubishi driver can pull something out of nowhere and Westy did just that yet again as he went almost 2 seconds faster than he had done in the previous rounds….
“We gave it our all and apart from a wee moment at the hairpin, we thought we couldn’t have done much better in the conditions…,” said a very happy Matt. “ It was a brilliant day out in the mud and we loved the knife edged competition with Westy.”
After a very busy month participating in events up and down the South Island, the PMTMotorsport Team at last gets a chance to catch their breath and will now turn their attention to securing the funding required to enter the final round of this year’s Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship – the Trusthouse Racetech Rally Wairarapa – which runs over the weekend of October 5th.
