The headline on the front page of the Gold Coast Bulletin read “Rally Ratbags – Hippie rock throwers wreck $100m event”, and it was clear that the Repco Rally Australia protesters were a very small minority.

The idiots that climbed trees and three rocks at the WRCars on the first day of the event were quickly arrested by police, and readers of the newspaper were quick to make their feelings known.

In a letters column, the following comments were made:

“Does this mean the Tweed will not be featured on the next XBOX 360 World Rally Championship game that goes out to 350 million game players? Damn treehuggers. An opportunity lost.” – Des

“Protesters are only doing harm to the local businesses who benefit from the income brought in by the WRC. The WRC will/should just pack up and take it somewhere people will appreciate the sport. These so called protesters are committing crimes like those throwing stones off bridges at cars, so why aren’t they being arrested?” – John C.

“As a local I am extremely embarrassed and angry at these protests. These people just don’t seem to understand they don’t own the country. I am ashamed. I hope the culprits are brought to justice.” – David

“Maybe it’s time we went down Nimbin/Uki way to protest the HEMP Olympics? An event that celebrates all things ILLEGAL. Imagine what all that pot smoke is doing to the environment. If you don’t like decisions of your govt, vote them out, don’t threaten the lives of these world class drivers.” – LAC, Gold Coast

In our view, these comments sum the situation up nicely.
