Retrospective: The big impact of an unlikely manufacturer exit

It’s 30 years since Australian rallying was left on a precipice after one of only two competing manufacturers pulled out of the sport.

It was just before Christmas in 1994 when Daihatsu pulled the rug out from under their drivers' feet, despite having just won the Australian Rally Championship manufacturers' title for the fourth year in a row.

This left Toyota as the only manufacturer with a factory team in the ARC, and while Daihatsu never had an outright contending car, their withdrawal was felt strongly.
