RallySport Magazine has long been a supporter of the Otago Classic Rally, based in Dunedin in New Zealand’s south island.
But if you can’t get to New Zealand to watch the action, the next best thing is to purchase the annual set of DVDs on the event, the 2006 version having just been released.
The three-DVD set includes a 35 minute overview of the event, as shown on New Zealand television, while the other DVDs give the viewer complete in-car coverage of the rally, with each special stage shown from a variety of cars.
The overview DVD is well worth a look as it not only gives coverage of the whole event, but includes interviews and the action on what Jimmy McRae describes as “the best rally roads in the world”.
If anything, the DVD is too short as the footage really gets you in and whets your appetite for more classic rally action. Seeing the stars, such as Finland’s Pasi Hagrstrom and Italy’s Alex Fiorio, and Kiwi hot-shots like Deane Buist, really gets your heart racing.
Compiled by Australian company Black Magic Productions, it really is a first class production.
The in-car DVDs are really a bonus, and if you like plenty of sideways action on rally roads from heaven, this is for you. Hagstrom, McRae, Fiorio, Dunkerton and Buist are just some of your drivers, and you’ll marvel at their skills.
Be prepared to put in some time watching the DVDs at the stages over 40km long take a while, but they get you in and ensure that you wish you were competing too.
You can buy any of the DVDs for $40 each, but they’re all worth a look and are well worth the $100 cost for the set of three.
Do yourself a favour – drop a big hint for a Father’s Day present, or order yourself the set because you can. You won’t be disappointed.
