Just in time for Christmas, organisers of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb received a special gift today.

Rod Millen, who has won nine class crowns in the famed event, will be back again on July 8 in the Time Attack division in his 2WD Hyundai Genesis Coupe after winning the event’s 2WD showdown in 2011 with a record clocking of 11:04.912.

New Zealand racing legend Millen won the Unlimited division on the Peak five times (1994, 1996, 1997, 1998 and 1999) and held the old overall record of 10:04.06 until Nobuhiro Tajima of Japan broke it in 2007.

His return last summer at the age of 60 and his winning performance was one of the highlights of the event. Tajima broke the elusive ten-minute barrier with his time of 9:51.278 in the Unlimited division on the same afternoon.

Once again, he will be joined by his famed son, Rhys Millen, who has also become one of the race’s legends. Rhys will be competing at Pikes Peak (Unlimited) for the 20th time in his career and was second in the Unlimited division last year behind the record-setting performance of Japan’s Tajima. Rhys drove his Hyundai RMR PM580 to a 10:09.242 effort despite unfortunate brake issues. The father-son duo live in Huntington Beach, California.
