The South Australian rally community has been deeply touched by the recent tragedies suffered in the Victorian bushfires.  The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) is pledging its support to those affected by the Victorian bushfire tragedy by setting up the CAMS Bushfire Support Appeal.

On Saturday March 7, the South Australian Rally Panel Promotions Committee will host a display, including a number of rally cars, at the Gawler Place canopy in Rundle Mall, to raise funds for the bushfire victims.

“For a gold coin donation, everyone has the chance to go into the draw to win 1 of 15 hot lap rides in a fully prepared rally car, proceeds will go to the CAMS Bushfire Support Appeal,” said Simon West – spokesperson for the South Australian Rally Panel Promotions Committee

Prizes will be offered at either the Mount Alma Mile Hill Climb on April 18-19 which is a tarmac event, or at the SA Autocross Championships on May 2, a gravel event held at Lanac Park near Mt Compass.

“Spectating at the Lanac Park rally track is fantastic for kids as they are able to see the action of the entire track from one vantage point.  Lanac Park is located on Munetta Road, Mt Compass.  We also encourage spectators to watch www.sarally.com.au for further updates.”

The 2009 South Australian Rally Championship is gearing up for another action packed year with an anticipated 35 competitors registering for the series.

“The 2009 state championship will consist of four major rounds, three gravel and one tarmac.  The field will consist of the turbo 4wd Subaru WRX’s, Mitsubishi Evo’s and the exciting sideways action of cars from yesteryear; Datsun 1600, 180B’s and Ford Escorts.    There is even a whisper that we will see the high revving Honda Civic of Denise Collins return after a several years absent from the sport,” said West.

“It is also important to remember the Autosport Clubman Series, which is heavily geared towards attracting newcomers to the sport.  We encourage people interested to speak to anyone involved in rallying.  You will find them very approachable and helpful.”
