Semmens wins 2WD Victorian Rally Championship
- 20th November 2012, 9:35am
Brian Semmens and Dan Parry (pictured) have won the two wheel drive Exedy Victorian Rally Championship at Rally Victoria held last weekend around Warragul. The long-time pairing just required a finish in one heat to seal the championship which they easily managed.
The Cerberus Car Club again hosted the final round of the Exedy VRC, also the final round of the Australian Rally Championship, which was won by Victorian Will Orders and Lauren Grey. 54 competitors lined up on Saturday from Lardner Park near Warragul for the final round of both series. Perfect weather and road conditions greeted crews who had noted the roads on the Thursday prior.
Ross Allan, fresh back from competing in the United States 2WD Championship, held off the regular VRC competitors to take the VRC event win with co-driver Nicholas Ryan in the RallySchool.com.au EVO 7. A consistent drive by the pair all day saw them finish 44 seconds clear of Tristan Penhall and Jolie Middleton in their current Subaru WRX’s last event. Penhall will now move into a later model 2006 Sti Spec C for the 2013 season.
The young brother pairing of Stephen (20) and Brent Mackenzie (17) put in an awesome drive beyond their years to finish in third outright just 20 seconds back from Penhall, while also setting outright competitive times against the Australian 2WD teams. The Mackenzie brothers will certainly be ones to watch in next year’s championship as they strive to put together a deal to take on the 2013 Australian Rally Championship.
Lindsey and Colin Wright are also showing continued improvement in their WRX Sti finishing fourth outright and are expected to be a threat to the outright contenders in 2013.
Justin Walker and Bianca Lowe finished a well-deserved second 2WD in their magic MKII Ford Escort after a disappointing result at the Akademos in October, the pair will be glad to get a good result.
They Excel Rally class was won by Viv Dilkes-Frayne and Doug Fernie wrapping up a stellar year for Dilkes-Franyne and sealing him the 2012 Hyundai Excel Rally Series outright. Due to Dilkes-Frayne changing co-drivers this has allowed Simon Barton-Ancliffe to snatch the Excel Co-Drivers series with his driver, Andrew Thompson.
Disappointment was felt by many crews with mechanical issues plaguing VRC competitors over the weekend. 11 crews failed to finish the event for various mechanical issues and some off-road situations.
The 2012 Exedy VRC Presentation will take place at Etihad Stadium on Saturday, February 9, 2013, with the first round of the Championship to kick off on Saturday, March 16, 2012, with Rally Bonnie Doon.
