Shepheard to return to ARC at Rally of Canberra
- 23rd February 2009, 2:02pm
The south-east Queensland based GSA Motorsport team is working flat out on final preparations on their new Evolution X Lancer for the upcoming Rally of Canberra in early March.
The event will mark the Australian gravel rallying debut for the brand new model Mitsubishi and the official return to full-time ARC competition for Steven Shepheard and the team. Shepheard has been absent from the ARC for five years, however last year used the older Evolution 6 on selected ARC events in preparation for the 2009 season.
Twice Queensland Rally Champion, Shepheard is looking forward to driving the new car and competing again in the national series.
“So far all the information we’ve been given about the new Evo confirms it should be great! Any doubts have been well and truly put to rest by yesterday’s results at the Bathurst 12 hour where three Evo X’s filled the podium,†he said.
“After driving the now ten year old Evo 6 for so long, I’m super-keen to get out there in something newer and more capable.â€
As well as the new car, Shepheard is joined this year by John McCarthy after long-time co-driver Tom Smith decided to cut back his competition programme.
“The new car looks great and I am really looking forward to stepping into the ARC full-time with Steve this year,†new co-driver John McCarthy said.
“Seven years ago I got involved in rallying as service crew for Steve, and now to have the opportunity to ride along side him is just fantastic.â€
The Rally of Canberra will be run over the weekend or March 7-8, and is based out of Stromlo in the Capital’s west.
