Leading Czech manufacturer ŠKODA is considering building a car to the exciting R5 regulations with ŠKODA Motorsport’s Pavel Hortek confirming the category represents “one of the best options for the future”.

ŠKODA has trialled a turbocharged engine in one of its all-conquering Fabia Super 2000 models as it continues to assess the practicalities of an R5 project in seasons to come when it would go up against Citroën, M-Sport (Ford) and Peugeot, who are all committed to the new-generation class.

“The R5 category is definitely one of the best options for the future and we have to pay attention to it,” Hortek told the Inside ERC programme recently. “And we are with great interest following our competitors from the teams of [M-Sport] and Peugeot. At the moment I can only tell you that we are following ERC and APRC with Jan Kopecký and Esapekka Lappi.”

ŠKODA’s pursuit of a second consecutive ERC drivers’ title following Juho Hänninen’s success in 2012 continues on Barum Czech Rally Zlín from 30 August-1 September. Kopecký will be among the favourites for victory on the asphalt contest.
