Entries are now open for a new event to run alongside the 2014 Sydney to London Marathon Rally, the John Giddings Memorial Trophy.

The new event will throughout the Australian section of the Sydney to London Marathon Rally, from Sydney to Perth. The John Giddings Memorial Trophy will be run under standard CAMS National Competition Rules to allow local cars to compete for the John Giddings Memorial Trophy without the extra cost and technical requirements of meeting the marathon event’s FIA regulations.

The Sydney to London Marathon Rally is a long distance event for competitors all over the world, competing in some of the seminal classic rally cars of the 1960s, 70s and 80s. Ford Escorts, Datsun 240Zs,Ford Mustangs, Porsche 911s and more will tackle 16,000 kilometres of roads in 8 countries over 30 days.

The battle for the John Giddings Memorial Trophy will take place across some of Australia's most picturesque scenery, including the Flinders Rangers, across the Nullabour, through Kalgoorlie and including a unique stage along the top of a ridge, passing wind turbines. As the event moves into Perth for the Australian finish, it includes two stages through the “Bunnings” forest area, made famous by World Rally Championship competitors running in Rally Australia many years ago.

The Sydney to London Marathon Rally will start in Sydney on 12 April, with the John Giddings Memorial Trophy running over the same roads all the way to Perth 11 days later. Competitors will put themselves and their cars to the limit over 7,750 kilometres, 33 stages and 1,133 competitive kilometres with one goal: to take home the John Giddings Memorial Trophy.

The trophy is named after the late John Giddings, who was busily preparing to take part in the 2014 Sydney to London Marathon Rally shortly before his passing in 2013.

Michael Giddings, son of John Giddings, said "It's a great honour to have the Australian leg of the Sydney to London Marathon Rally named after dad. It was an event he was really looking forward to and hopefully this will give competitors something to aspire to."

Keith Morling, Australian coordinator of the Sydney to London Marathon Rally, said "we're pleased to be able to honour John in such a way. The roads that make up the John Giddings Memorial Trophy are some of the best on the event, a mix of great scenery, flowing, twisty roads and some that are just rally heaven. Hopefully we will see a strong field fight for the trophy just as John would have liked."
