Local hero Ott Tanak completed the perfect lead-in to his home World Rally Championship round by winning the South Estonian Rally against his main WRC rivals. Tanak's Hyundai i20 WRC finished the rally by winning all but one stage, and took a 13.7 second victory against Toyota's young gun, Kalle Rovanpera. Rovanpera's Toyota team-mate, Sebastien Ogier, managed third place, 29 seconds from the lead, but Rally Sweden winner, Elfyn Evans, had a massive accident that destroyed his Yaris.

Kalle Rovanpera beat his more fancied team-mate, Sebastien Ogier, in a straight fight.

“I turned in ever so slightly early to a corner. I saw the long grass, but I took a bit of a chance to keep my line. I was probably a wheel’s width off the road in the cut, but there was a tree stump hidden in there," Evans told DirtFish. “When you’re going at such high speed, there’s not really a lot you can do about it. We rolled into the trees in fifth or sixth gear. I can’t remember whether it was fifth or sixth, but it was fast.”   Hyundai's Thierry Neuville was fourth but was never on the pace of his winning team-mate, while Esapekka Lappi grabbed fifth in a privately entered Ford Fiesta WRC. The WRC returns in two weeks time in Estonia after a six month break since the Rally of Mexico.
