Today’s announcement that RED Motosport in the UK will become an agent for Toyota South Africa’s Super 2000 car comes as the wave of enthusiasm for the new category continues to build momentum.

Toyota South Africa’s RunX car is the same shape as the Australian Corolla, however Toyota Australia, under the Neal Bates Motorsport banner, will not be using the South African car if it enters the S2000 category in 2007, as expected.

“In many ways we’ll be going down our own path,” Toyota’s Australian rally team manager, Darryl Bush, said today. “Although the test car that we are currently building is the same shape as the current Corolla, the car that we will rally will be the new bodyshape, due out next year.”

Bush says that the team are excited about the prospects of the S2000 category, adding that it will enable the Australian team to enter events such as Rally New Zealand, Rally Australia, and the Asia Pacific Championship, if it so desired. Their current Group N (P) Corollas are currently ineligible for FIA events.

“I think that the spectators are going to love the S2000 cars,” Bush added. “They will sound fantastic in the forest, and will bring a lot of excitement back into the sport.”

Ford Australia are also expected to enter the Super 2000 category in 2007, most likely with two cars.
