Rally Mexico, third round in the 2018 WRC calendar (locally known as Rally Guanajuato Corona), is to revert to its traditional ceremonial start in the old city of Guanajuato. In 2017 the event started at Zocalo Square in Mexico City. The prizegiving ceremony this year will be held in Guanajuato at the celebrated statue of the local hero El Pipila (Juan José de los Reyes Martínez Amaro), which is located in front of a spectacular view of Guanajuato city (see image). = = = = Volkswagen went to the south-west of France, just north of Pernignan, for tests of their new Polo GTI R5 car. Tests were carried out on both gravel and asphalt, in the hands of Pontus Tidemand and their resident test driver Dieter Depping. The team was familiar with the test tracks at Fontjoncouse as these were where they carried out the first tests of the Polo R WRC in 2011. Confirmed is that VW will be able to provide R5 cars to teams “from the second half of 2018”. = = = = Codasur championship runner-up, Argentine driver Marcos Ligato, tackles his final chance of a title this year at next weekend’s final round of the national series this weekend. This is at the Cruz del Eje’s Gran Premio Rally in his native Cordoba province. Marcos is currently 71 points in front of Geronimo Padilla. = = = = While news of Skoda Motorsport plans for 2018 are waiting to be announced, they have carried out winter rally tests run by the John Haugland Winter Rally School. These were carried out by Ole Christian Veiby and Kalle Rovanpera at the disused Norwegian Dagali airport. Skoda themselves have announced that their cars have secured 12 national rally championships this year, in additional to three of the FIA’s six regional rally championships. = = = = Finland celebrates the 100th anniversary of its independence from Russia on December 6, this Wednesday. It is reported that all the Finnish World Rally Champions are expected to join the official celebrations. = = = = PH Sport, the French preparation company which has close connections with Citroen Racing, have announced they will have a 2017 specification Citroen C3 WRC available for rental on WRC rounds in 2018. The range of events in which the 2017 specification cars could be run last year was limited (the FIA demanding approval of the drivers concerned), and the 2018 championship regulations have not yet been announced.
