The Western Australian Liberal Party has announced they are backing a bid to host Rally Australia. Western Australia and the city of Perth hosted a round of the World Rally Championship from 1989 until 2006, but Government pressure meant the event lost funding. The Liberal Party are currently not in office in Western Australia, but the bid would come to fruition if they were elected in 2021. This announcement comes after Australia lost its place in the WRC to New Zealand for 2020. It has been public for some time that the WRC Promotor did not believe Coffs Harbour was big enough to host such a major event like the WRC.
Leader of the WA opposition party, Liza Harvey, and fellow Liberal Party member, Alyssa Hayden, made the announcement in Western Australia today. Former WRC star, and WA resident, Alister McRae, was present to take prominent members for a ride in John O'Dowd's Skoda Fabia R5.
