Tasmania’s Jason White has again demonstrated why he is the favourite to win this weekend’s second round of the CAMS Australian Targa Championship in Victoria, by setting the fastest time at the Prologue held in the streets of Mansfield, late Friday afternoon.

White powered his Lamborghini Gallardo to a time of 1 minute 39.5 seconds on the 2.3 kilometre street stage, half a second quicker than 2010 Targa Tasmania winner Tony Quinn in his Nissan GT-R.

White, with co-driver and uncle, north coast businessman John White, have won the past five Targa events. They clean swept the four-event 2012/13 championship, and also won the opening round of the new season in Adelaide in August

“Today was great,” White said. “A big crowd turned up and the atmosphere was fantastic. It was good to put on a show but the real race starts Saturday morning.”

Targa High Country has attracted a field of 165 cars. The event, in its third year, involves 16 stages across 220 competitive kilometres, with the winner crossing the finish line at Mt Buller on Sunday afternoon.

The final two rounds of the national championship are in Tasmania, with Targa Wrest Point on the first week of February and the six-day Targa Tasmania getting underway on April 16.
