Ford driver Colin McRae was to drive a Mk2 Escort on the Colin McRae Stages, the event the former World Champion sponsors in his native Scotland. McRae drove his Uncle Hugh's car on the same event in 1990 and won the event by 30 seconds from Scottish Champion Jimmy Girvan in a Toyota Celica GT4. "It's just a bit of fun," he remarked. "I got a shell and bought a donor car with a BDA engine, but I don't know if the engine is good enough to use. "Every year I have run course car on this event I've used something different, hence the idea of a Mk2 this year," he added. McRae has driven a host of different cars on this event, from an MG Metro 6R4, a Ford Sierra Cosworth and a Ford Escort Cosworth. Clerk of Course for the rally Jim Brown was excited with McRae's participation on the event. "Even if Colin drove at walking pace through the stages people would stand and cheer," he said. McRae's co driver, Nicky Grist, was also to drive a Ford Ka on the same event, although he didn’t expect to set the world alight. "Hopefully sitting next to so many top drivers might have rubbed off on me!" he said. "It will be nice to see what I can achieve."
