Targa South West organisers have confirmed that the 2015 tarmac rally would be proceeding as planned on May 22 until May 24, despite the recent tragedy where a young spectator was fatally injured in a round of the WA Rally Championship.
Forty vehicles have entered in this year’s Targa South West and will participate in the three-day rally program on closed roads through the Manjimup and Pemberton regions.
The program starts on Friday May 22, with a charity hill climb taking place in Pemberton to raise money for local charitable organisation, Help-a-Mate.
On Saturday afternoon, entrants will compete on the streets of Manjimup, before joining other vehicles of interest in a stunning vehicle display along the main street of Pemberton on Sunday morning. The colourful array of classic and modern cars will be on show for the public to admire before entrants head off to tackle the Pemberton stage.
The recent tragedy at the Donnelly Rally has saddened many, particularly the Western Australian rally community. It has served as an unfortunate reminder that motorsport is dangerous.
Targa South West organiser Ross Tapper said that spectators are welcome to Targa South West to designated spectator areas.
“Watching a rally event is exciting, which is why so many people love to do it, but there are risks involved - motorsport is dangerous. I’d like to stress that safety has to come first and we would like to remind everyone to be extra vigilant every time they attend an event.”
Organisers would like to thank the Shire of Manjimup who have supported the event proceeding, and for loaning their beautiful region to the event.
