Sad news earlier this week was the passing of 78 year old Jim Porter, remembered as the long time co-driver of the four times British champion and originally Rover and then Ford works driver Roger Clark. They teamed up for local road rallying in Renaults and Minis while studying for an agricultural career. After three years co-driving in Cortinas, Jim’s rally career with Roger really took off with the arrival of the Escort rally cars, with major victories in Europe on the Tulip Rally and the Acropolis Rally. At Ford, Porter also co-drove for Jean-Francois Piot and Hannu Mikkola. When Ford’s rally activities wound down, he and Clark had a season with British Leyland. Porter’s active career ended in 1981, but by then he was already pursuing organisational opportunities not only for Ford, but also particularly at the RAC Rally in Britain. Ironically, he was working with the organisers when Clark himself twice won the RAC Rally. Through the 60s and 70s, Clark and Porter were a legendary pairing.
