Former Subaru World Rally Team driver, Chris Atkinson, has all but given up hope of competing in Repco Rally Australia, his home round of the World Rally Championship.

Speaking from Townsville on Friday, where he was competing in the MINI Challenge race, Atkinson told RallySport Magazine that his chances of finding funding for a drive in the September event were limited.

He now appears likely to miss the event, which will be a huge disappointment for the thousands of local rally fans who were hoping the Queenslander could challenge the likes of Loeb and Hirvonen for victory.

Atkinson heads back to Europe today, where he will continue his chase for funding for a drive in next year’s World Rally Championship.
